The grind

Introduction

By Land and Sea is a solo, round the world motorcycle trip for charity to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, and RAINN. These charities have helped my friends and family and I hope to further their missions by raising awareness and providing inspiration. This message will disappear if you create an account and login.

I wanted to wait to update until all of the insurance nonsense had been worked out, I felt like it would offer some kind of resolution…

…but in the end I’m just left feeling angrier than ever. The accident cost me $18,000, the insurance company (Hartford) paid me $8,000 back. I still can’t run on my left leg.

I’m fairly annoyed with the state of America today. We were the superpower for a long time but our citizens are nickel and dimed to death while those in Central America make do (and are happier!) with less. I think that’s really my biggest takeaway from this trip so far.

OUCH!

I came very close to getting hurt on my bike and it scared the hell outta me! Will you get right back on or are you a little nervous now? My whole family rides but I'm getting more and more afraid as I lose friends.
PS - ever been to Sturgis?

I think you got a LOT for your 18 grand! 6 months on your own seeing absoltely beautiful country you had never seen before. meeting hundreds of new people. Keeping in touch with the people who really care about you all the while.... We are proud of what you did and now you can charge forward onto the next great thing!

It doesn't seem like a coincidence to me that the richest nation in the world has some of the most vulturous business practices and a tacitly approving culture. Greed begets greed.

Not to get too utopia-delusional (or spew too much liberal drivel) but it follows, for me, that those with less, specifically less materially, are less distracted by the "pleasures" of greed, materialism, etc. It would appear that the opportunity to concentrate on what really matters in life is more readily available.

That said I'm not associating lower standards of living with happiness and I grant that being in such a privileged environment myself makes me largely blind to the reality of such things. Grass is always greener on the other side, etc. In all though, I can see and sympathize with your point.
